We all have our favorite motivational quotes. You may even say it to yourself as a little pick-me-up
from time to time. I even kept a nicely framed quote from Calvin Coolidge that was going to be
thrown away during an office remodel. That may have been more due to the pack-rat in me, but in that
moment, that poster spoke to me. I still haven’t actually hung up, but I appreciate catching a glimpse of
it from its corner spot on the floor.

It reads: “Nothing in this world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not: nothing is more
common than unsuccessful men with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb.
Education will not: the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are

This quote is great for me because I am a chronic procrastinator. I was always waiting to be properly
motivated or in the right mood to start something that I didn’t really want to do. There’s a flaw with
waiting on a mental/emotional state to complete a task and this quote shows that what you really need
is discipline. Like Nike says, just do it. You always have to get started from somewhere. Sometimes it
may feel awful but you just have to keep on truckin’.

By utilizing this philosophy I started regularly going to the gym before work. I can’t lie, it made me
hate mornings even more at first, but forcing myself to go has turned out to be a great life change. It is
also mildly the reason I get to take two weeks off to go visit Italy. I spoke about going to Europe with
my brother and girlfriend on countless occasions but we always seemed to wait for the “right” time and
put it off. One day my brother just decides that this is happening. He confirmed dates that didn’t create
major conflict for anyone and bought tickets on the spot. We will be touching down in Italy around the
time this is posted. That’s an awful depiction of discipline but I’m excited for my trip and it’s here to
show you should stop putting off the good things too. Go get started on that novel/painting/sweet wood
carving you always wanted to make!
